Title: Zyx Omega-G for $2650?
Post by: BSD2000 on August 23, 2011, 09:16:39 PM
I'm debating on holding off from buying a new turntable and getting a new cartridge instead.

There is a Zyx Omega Gold on Audiogon right now for $2650. It has gold wire coils, low output (.24mv) and is brand new. It retails for $6500 new.

If I did buy it, my R100H would be put up for sale since I wouldn't need two good cartridges.

Should I buy it?   :-\

Too late. :) I just got off the phone with the dealer. The cartridge should be here by Saturday. Just in time for hurricane Irene. ;D

Here's a review of the Zyx Omega-G cartridge: http://positive-feedback.com/Issue49/omega.htm (http://positive-feedback.com/Issue49/omega.htm)

I still plan on upgrading to a Rega P7 or P9 sometime in the future.

Once I receive the cartridge, I'll make an unboxing video and record what it sounds like when it plays it's first song. Check back on the forum for updates.

It's here! It's beautiful! But now I have to wait until huricane Irene passes before I can install and hear it.  :(

For now, you can see more pictures on the front page here:

lol

For what is cost, It better open up a wormhole.

The rain stopped from the hurricane, but the wind is still really strong. I better wait until the wind dies down before going out there and trying it out. I don't want to create some sort of a time/space vortex, plus have to deal with all this wind.

That damn thing sounds good!  It shows unreal clarity and depth and it's hardly been played yet.  I can't wait to hear it after it has been broken in.

Here's a few samples:

Duke Ellington - 'Take The A Train'

Earl Klugh - 'Jolanta'

Fleetwood Mac - 'Landlside'

Fleetwood Mac - 'Monday Morning'

These are 320K .mp3 samples of 96k/24bit recordings.

What do you think?  ;D

:o  :o  :o  :D

P.S. If you're using Audacity, you can save your recordings in FLAC format. Try that and see the difference between FLAC and mp3.  :)

Here's a few more quick samples of the Omega G:

Les Brown - 'Tickle Toe'
Direct-to-Disc recording.

Jazz at the Pawnshop - 'Take Five'
Audiosource pressing.

Spectrum - 'Splat'
This is a special numbered edition, direct-to-disc pressing.

There's about 2 hours on the cartridge so far and it's getting better and better. As good as the Rega P25 is, I'm tempted to try the Omega on the Scoutmaster. I had a lot of offers, but no serious buyers yet. It's all packed up, but it wouldn't be to hard to unpack it and set it back up. :)

Since this is a heavier cartridge, it might be a better match for the Scoutmaster unipivot tonearm.

So far, what I hear confirms what i was expecting; finer detail, extended bass and highs with clarity and smoothness from the gold coils. I used a Bearwald alignment using the Feichert protractor. Tracking force was roughly 1.99g.

 8)  All the samples sound fantastic!
1-Ellington - Take the A-Train the trumpet comes out with full bite and edge.
2-Klughs' guitar on Jolanta sounds absolutely live.
3-Fleetwood Macs' Landslide earns full arm and leg hair!
4-The vibes on Les Browns Tickle Toe sound so clear and full.
5-The sax in Jazz at the Pawnshops Take 5 sounds clear and full of reed rasp the way it should sound.

And last but not least, my surprising favorite of the group,
6-Spectrum - Splat  It just sounds overall amazing.  The layering of the recording is very obvious but not in a bad way.  All the instruments are very clear, distinct and punchy.  All of them holding their place in the piece very nicely.
From the sounds you recorded and posted I'd say the new setup rates at least 10 thumbs up!

It sounds awesome live.  :D

I see you got a new Hagerman Cornet 2 tube phono preamp (http://www.hagtech.com/cornet2.html). Cool! It sounds great in your latest video.
  • Did you build it as a kit or was it pre built?
  • Does it have enough gain for the Denon DL-103R without using a step up transformer?
  • Is there anything missing from the kit that you had to buy separately?
