Title: Sound City: Real to Reel
Post by: BSD2000 on March 19, 2013, 04:15:13 PM
Sound City Official Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQoOfiLz1G4#ws)

I just placed an order for Dave Grohl's new project - Sound City: Real to Reel on vinyl. Since the entire album is recorded using Sound City's all-tube, Neve 8028 console and a Studer 2" reel to reel, the sound quality should be amazing. Although, (as usual) the CD release suffers from the compressed 'loudness war' syndrome, the reviews I read of the vinyl edition seem to say that it sounds much better; excellent dynamics and very little compression. We'll see!

The record came today. I didn't get a chance to listen to it yet, but I will later tonight. Here's a shot of the front/back cover:

Well, I had a short listen to the second record and, from what I heard so far, it sounds very good! It's a little compressed, but not much. It does sound a lot better than the digital download version, that's for sure.

It snowed again last night and my porch is cold and damp; so I fired up the heater to warm everything up. I'm sure it will sound better once it's warm because Zyx cartridges hate playing when they're cold.

If you're interested in buying a copy, Amazon.com has it available for $29 directly from them (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B04KVMC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00B04KVMC&linkCode=as2&tag=vinylaunet-20), but I bought my copy through 'The Connection' under the 'more buying choices'. They had it for $19.47 + $2.98 shipping.

So if it's a 100% analogue recording, using top quality equipment, why is it still compressed?  ???

Do sound engineers have ears no more, or do they think people got no ears?  ::)
