Title: Failed tube in my Audio Research PH5 - music samples!
Post by: BSD2000 on September 22, 2011, 02:42:03 AM
To read the full story of replacing the bad tube, click here (http://www.vinylaudio.net/archives/101/failed-tube-in-my-audio-research-ph5).

Here's a few new samples of my Zyx Omega G cartridge and my Audio Research PH5 tube phono preamp after the tube was replaced:

Eric Johnson - 'Desert Rose' from the 'Ah Via Musicom' LP (original 1991 release, promo copy)
http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/EJ_Desert_Rose.mp3 (http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/EJ_Desert_Rose.mp3)
Joe Satriani - 'Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness' from 'The Extremist' (German pressing on Relativity)
http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Satriani_Rubina.mp3 (http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Satriani_Rubina.mp3)
Dave Brubeck - 'Take 5' from 'Dave Brubeck's Greatest Hits' (Columbia 1966 pressing)
http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Brubeck_Take5.mp3 (http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Brubeck_Take5.mp3)
Dave Brubeck - 'Three To Get Ready' (Jazz Wax reissue)
http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Brubeck_3.mp3 (http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Brubeck_3.mp3)
Jazz at the Pawnshop - 'Struttin with some BBQ' (Audiosource pressing)
http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Pawnshop_BBQ.mp3 (http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/Pawnshop_BBQ.mp3)
The Crystal Method - 'Trip Like I Do' (album version, 12" single)
http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/CM_Trip.mp3 (http://www.vinylaudio.net/forum/music/omega/CM_Trip.mp3)

For streaming purposes (and to cut down on bandwidth), the audio samples are encoded as 320K MP3's.

The Omega G cartridge has about 5 hours on it now, so it's far from broken in. The replacement tube is relatively new and is a tad brighter sounding then the other 3 tubes.  I have a spare set of Amperex 'Bugle Boy' 6922's I was thinking of trying, I wonder how they would sound?  :D

What do you guys think?

I suspect NOS tubes have greater construction quality than most of current manufacture tubes.

ok that sounds fantastic, it makes me wonder who's mastering these piece of crap cd's.... right there you have mp3's that sound better than raw .wav rips from cd's.... why not master the original tapes right into high quality mp3's and sell them on 1 gig flash drives???
