Title: Lightbox support for photo attachments
Post by: Admin on January 16, 2012, 06:49:15 PM
A new feature has been added:

Lightbox for photo attachments with a gallery / slide show feature.

The new functionality is automatic, just attach your photos with the default placement setting and when you click on one of the attached photos, it will start the gallery and slide show of the attached photos.

Note: You have to be a registered user to view attachments and pictures.

Let me know if you have any questions or problems with the new feature.

I've tried multiple times to start a new topic in the Other Equipment section, with some pictures attached, but it never worked. No attachment setting worked: every time, after hitting the "post" button, the page froze for several minutes, and finally refreshed itself, without the text and the attachments. I've tried both with wi-fi and cable line. Maybe the attachment system doesn't work well with Ubuntu/Linux and/or Firefox?

Hmm... I'll look into it and see what I can find. I did notice the server limit is 7MB per uploaded file, not 10MB, so I adjusted the file attachment settings in the forum configuration to reflect that. I also increased the maximum number of image attachments to 10.

There are also image resolution limits, which could effect whether the forum accepts or rejects an image file. I usually re-size images to maximum width of 1280 before uploading them. Raw .jpg images from my camera are too big and get rejected by the forum server when I attempt to upload them.

I was also thinking about adding support for attaching images from an outside photo storage sites like Photobucket or Webshots, but I'm not sure which site is the most widely used by the forum members. If you have any suggestions on which site to use, let me know.

For now, try to re-size the picture to a width of 1280 or less pixels and let me know if that works.

It worked.  :) I've re-sized the pictures to 1280; however the upload was very slow: 2 minutes for 8 pictures, and 1 minute for 3 pictures.
I've noticed that during the upload, Firefox was repeatedly trying to contact the revolvermaps site: I suspect that this slowed down the process.
